PRESS RELEASE 27TH JULY 2009 TROTTER EILEAN DONON TO STAND DOWN UNDER
New trotting sire for Goulburn Valley
Eilean Donon Tr 1:53.4 ($403,068), one of the best bred and best performed sons of the great Angus Hall, a world champion and a leading sire of trotters in North America, will stand the coming season at the new Aldebaran Park Stud, Nagambie, alongside Aldebaran Yankee. They are a royally-bred pair of young sires.
Eilean Donon was a top racehorse himself, winning just over $400,000 from just 31 starts.
As a two-year-old he won in 1:57.2 at Woodbine, winning a $100,000 Ontario Sires Stakes Gold Final carving out his last half in 56.7 seconds.
Rated Canada's top two-year-old trotter of his year, Eilean Donon won six races and was three times placed from 11 starts for $235,469 in stakes. He won another $100,000 OSS Gold Final, at Mohawk in 1:57.2, the $80,000 Group 2 Champlain Stakes and three OSS Gold elimination heats.
He took his record of 1:54 at three years, winning an Open Trot at The Meadowlands, one of four wins in his sophomore campaign.
Undoubtedly the highlight of his three-year-old season was his come-from-behind win in a $100,000 elimination of the Hambletonian, defeating 2003 US Trotter of the Year Cantab Hall in 1:54.4.
He also won the $100,000 Group 2 Simcoe Stakes (in 1:54.6) and a heat of the $235,000 Goodtimes in 1:54.8 and finished third in the final behind Windsong's Legacy.
An upstanding bay horse of 16 hands, Eilean Donon is a son of Angus Hall Tr 1:54.6, the sire of the winners of over $40 million and the current leading sire of trotters in USA.
The ‘Hall's' are dominating the American trotting scene occupying five of the top eight positions on the American three-year-old sires' list.
Legend Queen, dam of Eilean Donon, has left three in 2:00 from four to race. She was a daughter of the Hambletonian winner Legend Hanover Tr 1:56.2, by the mighty Super Bowl Tr 1:56.4, Hambletonian champion and sire of six ‘Hambo' winners.
A grandson of influential sire Garland Lobell, Eilean Donon carries the blood of Super Bowl, Star's Pride, Speedy Crown and Nevele Pride, all champion sires and broodmare sires.
Eilean Donon has served in excess of 100 mares in his first two seasons in Holland and was selected for Southern Hemisphere duties by champion trotting trainer Chris Lang while campaigning Sundon's Gift on the European Grand Circuit. He was originally selected and imported to Europe by John Bootsman, one of Europe's leading breeders and the owner of one of Europe's leading stud farms in Boko Stables. He was chosen specifically to stand in Europe after Bootsman witnessed his win in the ‘Hambo' heat.
Chris and Sharon Lang established a strong relationship with Bootsman and Boko Stables whilst in Europe, and coupled with Boko Stables' desire to establish a link with the Australasian Breeding Industry, an agreement was reached for Eilean Donon to travel to Australia and stand at Aldebaran Park. Eilean Donon will likely return to Europe to continue duties after standing in Australia.
“He is a striking individual with great conformation. He will be a fantastic new option for all trotting breeders in Australia for the 2009 season,” Lang said.
Leading USA horseman Bob Stewart, who prepared Eilean Donon, said: “Eilean Donon is one of the best gaited horses I've ever trained. And that says something…I've also trained his sire Angus Hall and Angus' brothers Conway and Andover. I would not doubt a second to breed my mare to Eilean Donon …he had extreme speed, a round and very economical gait and has a flawless conformation.”
Eilean Donon is currently serving out a one month quarantine period in Newmarket, England and will arrive at Aldebaran Park in the first week of September. His service fee is $2475 including GST.
