Tornado strikes at Melton - March 2020

By Peter Wharton

SKYVALLEY’s champion son Tornado Valley posted his 21st win at Group level and his 35th lifetime success when he captured the Group 3 Scotch Notch Memorial at Melton. It was also his second win in the time-honoured classic.

Starting from inside the back row, the gelding was forced to work overtime before producing a 57.5 last half to put paid to his rivals.

Tornado Valley boasts career stake earnings of $767,617, of which $275,710 has been banked in the 2019/20 season and he is clearly the richest square-gaiter currently racing.

Tornado Valley was one of six winners left by SKYVALLEY in March.

Other winners were Skyline, who scored twice at Albion Park, Myrtle Vale, a winner in 1:59 at Kilmore, Kimmywho (Maryborough), No Republic (Ballarat) and a ‘new’ winner in the Aldebaran Park bred Winnie Cooper (Maryborough).

Aldebaran Park bred four individual winners during March. Apart from Winnie Cooper, the stud bred and owned two-year-old colt Aldebaran Zeus was a very impressive winner on debut at Bendigo with a final half in 59.1, while Hotjane Bling (by Eilean Donan) won in 1:55.7 at Menangle and Fend Off (by YIELD BOKO) posted his second success at Melton.

Another son of YIELD BOKO in Godofthunder overcame a 20 metre handicap to capture the Gawler Hambletonian Trotters Cup, his seventh win.

Aldebaran Park has purchased the royally bred three-year-old filly Rain Mist And Muscle from New Zealand to bolster its racing and broodmare stocks. The last start winner is a daughter of Muscle Hill and the Pegasus Spur mare October Rain (5 wins) whose grand-dam, Merinai, won 19 races including the Dominion Handicap and Rowe Cup and $244,155 in stakes.

Already the sponsor of the $50,000 Maori Mile, the richest provincial trotting classic in Australia, Aldebaran Park has further strengthened its ties with the Bendigo club by agreeing the sponsor the Bendigo Trotters Cup. The Aldebaran Park Bendigo Trotters Cup, to be held on June 26, carries a purse of $25,000 and a voucher worth $2,000 towards a service to SKYVALLEY to the winning owner.
